Amazon.com Product DescriptionFar from the smallest mobile computer in Sony's notebook lineup, the VAIO PCG-FRV25 is nevertheless extremely powerful and nicely equipped. If size and ease of portability are not overriding factors, the capable VAIO PCG-FRV25 is a wise and cost-effective choice. By today's ever-decreasing standards, the 13 by 10.8 by 2.26 inches, 7.72 pound VAIO PCG-FRV25 is of slightly above-average size. It is, however, more powerful than many desktops. Featuring a muscular 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512 KB Level 2 cache, a 533 MHz system bus, 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 1024 MB) and a 64 MB ATI Radeon IGP 345M graphics chipset, the unit will quickly carve through most any task it is given, including many 3-D games and applications. Sony has fitted the system with an adequate 40 GB hard disk and an internal CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, backup important files and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. You'll monitor your activities on a large 15-inch XGA TFT display capable of 1024x768 resolution. Other desirable amenities include an internal V.90 modem for low-speed e-communications, an Ethernet interface for high-speed connectivity, headphone and microphone ports, an 86-key QWERTY keyboard with electro-static touchpad, and a pair of stereo speakers with surround-sound imaging. Home movie and digital picture buffs in particular will appreciate the unit's two high-speed USB 2.0 ports and single IEEE 1394 interface, through which they can quickly transfer video and still images. Sony has pre-installed an impressive variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003, Microsoft Works 7.0, and a broad array of audio, video and photo utilities.

 | | Still going strong | November - 02 - 2009 | | | by M. Collins After over six years this computer is still going strong. With no upgrades and a few good cleanings I was able to install xubuntu on the machine and it flies.
My sister used this machine the whole way through college and I bought a MacBook Pro when I went to college. I use the MBP to take to class and work with XP/OS X/write papers but I use this mainly as a machine to surf the internet and get email. After 6 years I decided to remove XP and installed the latest version of Xubuntu (9.10) which was painless.
The machine only has 512 mb of ram but that is now comparable to low end netbooks, so Xubuntu doesn't really drag at all. Firefox flies, and I find Xubuntu to be an easy way to surf the internet and keep as a low powered desktop replacement. I'm thinking I may upgrade the ram and HD and keep this as a long term internet device, but I am not sure how much longer the machine will keep running. The fans are very loud when they kick in and I do keep this on a fan pad, otherwise it heats up very quickly.
The only other issue is that the battery dies very quickly (so it must be treated like a desktop) but overall this machine is very fast for when it was built and does not drag at all with standard specifications. It's a great way to learn a new OS if you decide to pull it out of the closet and use it again by loading linux.
Great computer... I just wonder if my MBP will last 6 and a half years...

I bought this machine in June of 2003 and this machine still runs like a charm as of November 15, 2008. I have since upgraded the RAM and looking to follow suit with other parts to keep it somewhat revelant. I give it four stars due to Sony's terrible customer service and the dvd drive acting up slightly. Overall, this is a great machine that can handle light to moderate tasks and excels in DVD playback(15 in. TFT LCD display and WinDVD software included with OS).

I am writing to you on my Vaio PCG-FRV25. Yessiree. Bought it right when they were available over 5 years ago, and it is astounding to me that the processing speed keeps up with all my work to this day.
I dumped an entire glass of milk on this thing back in Ought Five. Zapped the keyboard. One inexpensive replacement keyboard later, I was back to illegally downloading music off LimeWire.
Of course that "adequate" 40 Gig hard drive is full, but my 300 Gig G-Drive Q is the perfect dumping ground for the memories we've shared.
Ah well. Good times, Sony. Good times.
Never did use that memory stick.

I bought this laptop in Apr, 2003 for College. It is great. I can do pretty much everything a college student and more can do.
The only thing i dont like about this laptop, well there are two, are first, the fan, and second the weight.
The fan is loud and it runs non-stop. Even with the fan running constantly the computer is still quite hot. The weight is the other factor for me. It weights close to 8LBS! So it is not really a laptop, just a cool thin desktop.
By the way, dont wear shorts and have this laptop on your lap. You will be asking for first degree burns hahahah.
But not to dis this laptop too much, since i am typing from it right now, it is a good laptop/desktop for a college student.
