Customer Reviews
 | | for what it's designed for, it is the very best | August - 06 - 2010 | | | by Art F. Christofersen The good.
It covers an incredible angle of view on a full frame camera. Has near perfect distortion control even at wide apertures. The fit and finish are what you expect from Nikon. Auto focus on my D700 is fast and accurate even in low light. Flare is well controlled and colors are crisp even in candle lit night shots with the light source in the picture.
The not so good.
This thing is HEAVY. Yes I know it's a pro lens built to take a lot of use so what do I expect but it's still huge. The zoom range is pretty limited. It's a great wide angle and covers the entire range that I think of as 'wide' but don't try to use it for a 'normal' lens unless your vision is notably wider than mine. You can't use filters of any kind on it. The 'lens hood' is permanently attached and even if you could figure a way to thread something on the front of this thing the front element would stick out too far to put it on. There is no vibration control. Compared to my other nikor lenses the zoom and focus controls are reversed. It's expensive.
my conclusion
If you have to have the widest, fastest, best optical quality zoom for a full frame nikon mount camera this is it. If you have an aps ( 'C' size more or less) sensor camera you might want to look at other options since there are clear compromises made to get the near perfect full frame performance this lens has.
| | | | | | Excellent resolution, low distortion | July - 03 - 2010 | | | by JohannesHC from Virginia
My new 14-24mm went on my "DX" Nikon D70, as I hope for a Nikon "FX" body that either better meets my "sweetspot" for price or significantly improves on the noise-free ISO range of the popular D700. This wide lens is designed to perform at its best on full-frame (FX) bodies. Its cropped-frame equivlant range on a DX body is about 21-42mm. But, I'm just waiting, investing mainly in lenses.
Landscapes and close-in shots of people in crowded, interior spaces with the 14-24mm are crisp, and focusing is quick and quiet, even with my cropped-sensor D70. The, brightness, clarity and depth of field of its very wide shots amaze me.
Continuous f2.8 gives correct exposures based on in-camera light metering in low light and in focusing for flash.
My Nikon 28-70mm, 50mm f/1.4 prime and Nikon 10mm, fisheye all make good, equivalent exposures at f2/8. But the 14-24mm makes the world look huge and rectilinear - as most of us are trained to expect when standing in big spaces.
One reviewer whose opinions I respect and normally agree with panned this lens for its weight and inability to accept conventional filters. Of course, it is vulnerable to damage and/or smudging from head-on contact with people and objects. But I accept those inconveniences and risks in return for being able to make extemely wide shots. Some day, using it on a full-frame body, my satisfaction with this lens is only likely to increase.
| | | | | | This will kick your ass into another dimension! | May - 24 - 2010 | | | by John Brookes (inventor, engineer) from Silicon Valley
Its another dimension of existence and perception. Why be one of the turkeys - soar like an eagle with this space warper.
| | | | | | Nikkor 14>24mm Ultra Zoom, f2.8 | May - 12 - 2010 | | | by B. Navarro ($modelman$) from Andover Ma
This lens is by far, the very best Nikkor wide angle out there. The old saying, "you get what you pay for" is very true. Very little distortion along the edges. Would highly recommend this lens on a film or full frame digital camera. works well on the DX format camera also.
