Product Descriptions from Manufacturer
With a compact, lightweight design, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G provides the high reproduction capability and picture quality for which Nikkor lenses are renowned at an affordable price. The ring type SWM offers quiet AF operation. Although all lens groups shift during focusing, the front element and filter mount do not rotate and the barrel length does not change, which is useful when using filter mounted SB-R200 Wireless Remote Speedlight units. The AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G optical design allows a different look and feel to images taken with zoom lenses, and its dimensions are ideal for discrete snapshots and landscape shooting with a picture angle that approximates that of the human eye. With its rounded seven-blade diaphragm opening, out-of-focus elements appear more natural. When mounted on a DX-format SLR, the picture angle is the 35mm equivalent focal length of 50mm. The AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G has two focus modes, M/A (manual override autofocus) and M (manual focus). The M/A mode enables instant manual switching during AF operation. The lens also features a rubber seal to minimize moisture ingression around the mount and can focus down to 0.3 meters (0.98 ft). AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G Lens Highlights - Fast, f/1.8 prime lens is perfect for low-light conditions, travel, environmental portrait and general photography
- Engineered for Nikon DX-format D-SLRS, the AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G lens renders a picture angle approximating the classic normal angle of view of a 50mm lens on a Nikon FXformat digital SLR or 35mm film camera
- Aspherical lens element minimizes coma and other types of lens aberrations, further improving image integrity
- Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers color consistency and reduced flare
- Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus
- Close focusing to 1 foot for creative perspectives and versatility
- Rounded 7-blade diaphragm opening makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural
- Accepts 52mm filter attachments
Product DescriptionFast, lightweight f/1.8 prime DX-format NIKKOR lens perfect for low-light conditions, travel, environmental portrait and general photography

Customer Reviews
 | | What comes with it? | August - 28 - 2010 | | | by M. Wallace (lightsource) from Houston, TX USA
I'm kindof surprised that Amazon doesn't include this in the product description... This lens ships from the factory with front and rear lens covers, a Nikon hard plastic (bayonet style) HB-46 lens hood (that fits loosely, by the way) and a drawstring bag with a round rigid bottom.
I actually considered buying a hood when I made the purchase, since it wasn't included in the description.
Otherwise, I've taken maybe 100 pics with this lens since I received it; pictures are notably sharper than with Nikon's kit lenses, in fact so much so that it's a bit like that time when you were 10 and got glasses for the first time and realized that trees have individual leaves. Well worth the money!
| | | | | | Everyone should have a fast prime lens | August - 28 - 2010 | | | by C. Allen from Seattle, WA USA
If you are serious and discriminating enough of a photographer to invest in a DX - format Nikon DSLR, whether it be a second-hand D40 or a state of the art D300S you should have this lens in your bag (or better yet, on your camera!). I'll skip all the technical details which you can get in any number of web reviews and say that this lens really brings out the best of the features that motivated you to buy your DSLR in the first place. Fast, bright, great depth of field control. You can even squeeze more out of your on-camera flash!
Personal Experience: I have been a hack photographer for a long time. When I took a basic photography course 'back in the day' about the only requirements were that you had a 35mm camera with 50mm lens. I went through many cameras after that but always had a 50mm f/1.8 lens. My D80 (purchased used at Glazer's Camera in Seattle by the way) came with an 18-70mm zoom and I immediately started using my film camera's 50mm. Very nice but if you are still reading this you probably already know that on a DX format Nikon, 50mm performs as though it was a 75mm on film - which is a great portrait lens but not so great for general walk about photography. I wanted the famous 35mm f/2D lens but balked at the $300-$400 price - even used. When Nikon announced this 35mm DX lens I signed up for preorder and since receiving it find that it is on my camera at least 75% of the time, and when it's not on my camera it's in my pocket ready to go back on. Yes, you have to work at composition a little more with a fixed focal length lens - zooming with your feet or cropping with post processing but the results are well worth it! A side benefit is your camera is also much lighter and balanced whith this lens, and less intimidating to your subjects.
If you are still not sure you need and can actually use this lens - tape your 18-55 or whatever to 35mm and go shooting. See if you like the compositions and then look at your technique factors and consider what having two or three more f/ stops available would do for your imagery. This should provide you with the deciding factors and if not, rest assured knowing you can buy this lens and if you really never have a use for it - you can sell it a and recoup most of your investment.
| | | | | | Great low light lense for the price! | August - 27 - 2010 | | | by gonzaga9205 I purchased this lense for my Nikon D60 because I was in desperate need of a low light lense. This lense is fantastic in low light enviroments (indoors). Great aperture (f/1.8)! With a flash it takes great photos! Really crisp and highly detailed. Has a descent focusing speed. The only downside is that it is a fixed focal length lense. So to zoom in you literally have to step closer to your target. Also, it is not a VR (vibration reduction) lense. However, it can easily be overlooked due to the low price tag (typically under $200). Overall, I am really pleased with this lense!
| | | | | | LOVE this lens! | August - 24 - 2010 | | | by Jessica Gustafson (jeskalg) from honolulu, hawaii
I originally bought the 50mm lens but my view was so constricted it drove me bonkers. I decided to try out this 35mm lens after reading more info on it. I love this lens! It blurs out the background just as well as the 50mm lens but gives you a MUCH broader view. You can use this lens for day to day use and it takes great photos.
| | | | | | Why didn't I buy this sooner? | August - 12 - 2010 | | | by Felix F from Detroit, MI United States
When I first started experimenting with photography, I was using an old Nikormat with a 50MM lens. I really loved a lot of the pictures I took with that setup. I've now ended up with a Nikon D300s and mostly use a 18-200MM lens. It's captured many great shots, but I've never been completely happy with closeups of people and pets. Until I bought this lens.
I've had this lens for a couple months, and I'm completely satisfied with it. I'm only disappointed that I didn't buy a prime lens years ago. This lens is roughly equivalent to your normal field of view, so it's well suited for subjects you can walk up to.
The lens itself is well constructed. I have no complaints with optical quality, focus speed, etc.
