Product DescriptionThe go-to lens of demanding professionals and serious enthusiasts, the 70-200mm f/2.8 is one of the most useful and sought after high-performance lenses for sports, wildlife, portrait, travel and news photographers. Nikon has further refined the lens, with an enhanced optical formula featuring seven extra low dispersion (ED) glass elements. These elements provide the ultimate in rendering characteristics to capture vibrant, high resolution images with optimal contrast. Image quality is further enhanced by Nikon's Nano Crystal Coat, which reduces instances of lens flare and ghosting, elevating optical performance, even in tricky conditions such as those found in professional sports settings and stage events. Designed to deliver the pinnacle of image quality in a wide variety of conditions, the new 70-200mm VR II lens also includes a Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, quiet autofocusing. The SWM takes full advantage of 3D tracking autofocus (AF) systems, such as those found on the FX-format D3X, D3 and D700 D-SLR cameras. Three focus modes are available - M, A/M and M/A - for automatically focusing, manually focusing or fine tuning AF performance to best suit the photographers' needs. Nine rounded diaphragm blades contribute to a more attractive bokeh, allowing photographers create soft and more naturally separated backgrounds that better highlight the subject. Customer Reviews
 | | Some things to consider... | July - 21 - 2010 | | | by Darren P. Jones (Photography Teacher) from Greater D.C. Area
To be honest, this is by far one of the nicest lenses I have ever shot with. I have spend some years working for camera stores in different locations so i have had the time to play with 50 year old used lenses to the new new stuff. The 70-200 vrII is amazing.
There are 7,000 reviews out there about this thing that go into insane detail so I will leave you with this, if you are choosing between this and the 24-70 as the first big buy, get the 24-70. Yes some of you might like the 70-200 if 100% of your work is studio. But if you are like me and an active photographer, the 24-70 will bring out many parts of you that you couldn't imagine.
A couple of years ago I started hitting a peak in my photography. Nothing was really jumping out and screaming yes yes yes! Once I upgraded and bought this lens along with the 70-200 it really opened my eyes. The quality of bokeh and so forth just makes such a huge difference in picture quality. And by quality I mean right out of the hole quality. With the new D5000 there is really nothing more to say.
As I recommended to 90% of my customers (unless they needed something very specific like commander mode or full frame) spend everything on your lenses and get the best you can. Afterwards see how many pennies you have left over for a body. At that point buy new if you can, D3000 or D5000 for our time frame, or if that is too much, go buy a used d70s, d40, d50, or d60... These lenses will only go up in price over time. That "amazing" body you want will only go down. And it will go down fast.
| | | | | | You can't loose with this lens | July - 06 - 2010 | | | by Dan DaMan You'll get your money's worth with this lens! As a pro shooter I traded in my Tamron 70-200 for this lens and haven't looked back (except for the Tamron's Macro ability.) VR is actually noticeable while shooting.
| | | | | | Nikon 70-200mm vrII | June - 22 - 2010 | | | by Photo Dave from Texas
Typical Nikon "Pro" lens quality, construction, and performance. It is a bit heavy, but not unexpected considering the aperature and VRII capabilities. So far I have only taken a few dozen images, but all were sharp, excellent color, and almost no distortion. I will mainly use this on a D700 with minor use on a D300. This lens is one of the best for portraiture close-ups and even head shots at the tele end. I may use it some for wildlife and nature shots where a very long tele is not needed.
| | | | | | Overrated | June - 19 - 2010 | | | by John Samadi from Florida
I called the local Nikon Dealer, asked him about this lens and expressed my concern that it is not really a 200mm from near distance. He said "that is the bloggers saying. This is an outstanding lens if you can afford it" Knowing about the reviews on Amazon and assurance from the local dealer, I bout this lens. Tested and compared the reach with my 75-300 lens at about 9 ft.away from the camera. Sure enough, it is about 150 instead of 200. Additionally, took a number of pictures on a sunny day. The quality was not five star as many reviewers believe.
| | | | | | Great lens! | June - 14 - 2010 | | | by M. Anderson from California
Expensive, but worth it. Quality is top notch. Takes crisp, clear images. Fast lens. It's large and fairly heavy, but if high quality images mean more to you than the size/weight, this is the lens to get.
